Decide Boldly or Drift Slowly: The Cost of Indecision in a World That Won’t Wait

By Marshall Krupp Certified EOS® Implementer and Certified Outgrow Advisor

The world is not slowing down for us. In fact, it feels as though it’s accelerating. The pace of change — globally, nationally, locally, and certainly inside our businesses — is overwhelming even for the most seasoned leaders. We are living in a time where disruption is the norm, ambiguity is the atmosphere, and complexity is the terrain. Whether it’s technology, economics, geopolitics, workforce culture, or supply chain instability, every layer of the business environment is in flux. Yet, amidst this chaos, one truth becomes even more apparent: we must make decisions. We must decide boldly — not later, but now. In today’s leadership and entrepreneurial ecosystems, indecision is not merely a pause — it is a liability. It’s ironic that in a time when we have access to more information than any generation before us, we also face greater difficulty discerning what to do with it. Data is abundant, advice is endless, and perspectives are often contradictory. Leaders are bombarded with content, trends, tools, thought leaders, AI-generated insights, and countless dashboards. But insight without action is merely intellectual clutter. As historian and bestselling author Yuval Noah Harari reminds us, in a world saturated with irrelevant and excessive information, clarity itself becomes the most powerful tool. Without it, leaders find themselves spinning, unable to anchor their teams in direction or progress. When clarity becomes elusive, procrastination sneaks in. Leaders delay. Decisions get pushed to next week’s meeting. Follow-up turns into follow-through — eventually. That “eventually” becomes expensive. The cost of indecision is not always immediate. It creeps in quietly through lost opportunities, eroded trust, employee disengagement, customer dissatisfaction, and market share stolen by bolder competitors. In my work as an EOS® Implementer, I’ve seen how the inability — or unwillingness — to make timely decisions can grind an otherwise healthy company to a halt. The Entrepreneurial Operating System® provides a practical framework that empowers leadership teams to break through the fog and move forward. The truth is, not deciding is a decision. It is a decision to stagnate. And stagnation in today’s world is the first step toward irrelevance.

Here’s how indecision shows up in the real world:

  • A sales manager who won’t commit to a new pricing structure loses margin each day.
  • A CEO who postpones replacing a toxic team member sacrifices culture and performance.
  • A founder who hesitates to pivot their business model in response to a shifting market gets left behind.

Even centuries ago, leaders understood this truth. The medieval philosopher and physician Maimonides once asserted that the risk of making the wrong decision is still preferable to the terror that comes with making none at all. That fear-based paralysis, often masquerading as prudence, keeps businesses stuck far longer than any misstep ever would. Indecisiveness is more than just frustrating; it is often rooted in fear — fear of failure, of judgment, of not having all the answers. But there is no such thing as perfect information. Every leader must learn to discern when they have enough to move forward — and then move. Procrastination, when dressed up in the language of “waiting for more data” or “needing more time to think,” feels rational. But the truth is that it’s a hidden tax on your business.

What does it cost?

  • Momentum. Teams lose steam when leaders don’t lead decisively. A stalled decision at the top causes confusion and misalignment at every level below.
  • Credibility. Leadership is a trust-based relationship. Consistent hesitation erodes that trust.
  • Revenue. Decisions deferred are opportunities delayed — and often lost to competitors.
  • Talent. High performers don’t stick around in cultures where accountability is optional and direction is unclear.

This is especially true for entrepreneurial companies, where speed and decisiveness are often the only competitive advantages against larger, slower institutions.

Here’s a paradox: making the wrong decision can often be better than making no decision at all. Wrong decisions teach. They reveal what doesn’t work and force you to pivot. But indecision? It teaches nothing. It only keeps you circling the runway while others are already in flight.

In the words of legendary hockey player and entrepreneur Wayne Gretzky, who built his reputation on strategic anticipation and relentless action, the greatest losses come from not taking the shot at all. Leaders must take the shot. Always.

Of course, the goal isn’t to be reckless. Discernment is critical. But discernment doesn’t mean delay. It means distilling the right data, aligning the right team, using the right process — and then deciding. Leadership in this environment is not about perfection. It’s about courageous clarity. The best leaders are the ones who lead through uncertainty, not away from it.

This isn’t easy. I’ve worked with over 500 entrepreneurs, executives, and leadership teams. Every one of them has faced the weight of hard decisions. The difference between those who scaled and those who stalled was never intelligence — it was always about willingness to act.

So where do we begin?

  • Create clarity. What are your core values, your vision, your 10-year target? If these aren’t clear, decisions become even harder.
  • Build a decision-making rhythm. Weekly EOS® Level 10 Meetings™, quarterly rocks, and annual planning are essential EOS® tools that promote structured decision-making.
  • Be accountable. Own your role, own your data, and own your outcomes. This cascades throughout the team.
  • Fail fast. Learn faster. The quicker you course-correct, the faster you can grow.

Here is my final word. The world is complex, noisy, and overwhelming. But businesses do not need to be. Simplicity, focus, and discipline are still possible — if we have the courage to choose them.

Whether you are a CEO navigating uncertainty, an Integrator supporting execution, or an emerging leader looking for direction, remember this: Your ability to make decisions — especially hard ones — is what will separate you from those who wait. Decide boldly. Move forward. And if you’re wrong, adjust. But never let indecision be your default setting. The cost is simply too high!
